Agra, the city of the Taj Mahal, has been given a major push by the Indian government through a series of developmental projects in Agra and the adjoining areas to promote tourism on a large scale. When it comes to development in Agra, various projects like Smart City, Iconic Tourist Site (an initiative of the Ministry of Tourism), Agra Metro Project (Connecting local tourist sites and beautifying the city’s infrastructure), and many other projects have been executed to upgrade tourism in Agra. During the season time, tourists visit Agra with different conveyance, which creates congestion on roads, and that prompted the government to develop the metro project. The metro project started in 2020 and was commissioned in 2024 for the first phase, one of the fastest projects in India. The cost of the Agra Metro project is around INR 8300 crores (900 Million Euros). The 50% cost is being funded by the European Investment Bank and the balance cost is equally shared between the Federal and State governments by yearly allocation from the budget.
